BECOME A GREEN BEING
When we burn fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere.
Trees and other plants use carbon dioxide, but there are not enough trees to use up the carbon dioxide produced when coal and other fuels are burned. So we need to reduce the amount of fossil fuels.
Every time we switch on a light or use a car we are responsible for releasing Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The power that we use to light or heat our homes or to power
our parents' cars comes from burning fossil fuels.
The average Irish household produces over 8 tons of Carbon Dioxide per
year. Thats about four swimming pools of carbon dioxide.
Greenhouse gases act as a heat trap for the sun's energy, causing our planet to heat up. This is known as the greenhouse effect.
Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming and climate change. The ice in the polar regions is melting quickly. The polar bears and penguins are loosing their habitats. Islands such as the Maldives and other lands at sea level are at risk of being wiped out by rising sea levels.
The amount of carbon dioxide that each of us are responsible for releasing into the atmosphere is called our carbon footprint. We can reduce our carbon footprint by reducing the amount of energy that we use from fossil fuels.
To becoming a Green Being we have to becoming energy efficient, reduce carbon emissions and help stop global warming.
Green Beings use less energy and have smaller carbon footprints
Green Beings encourage their families and friends to become more energy efficient
